Installing the FlexLM server |
A multi-user floating license uses a server to issue licenses to remote
MI/X 4.2 installations. The server can be either Unix (Linux, SGI, Sun, or IBM
RS6000) or Windows 2000 (Workstation or server) / XP.
Windows
For Windows 2000 or XP, download the
License Server package and install it.
Also run MI/X on the machine which will serve as a license server and
write down the machine ID that it reports--you will need it later.
Unix
For Unix, download one of the following:
Uncompress the tar file in /usr/local. This will create a flexlm directory
there. Note, if you already have FlexLM installed in /usr/local/flexlm,
extract the tar file somewhere else and read the README file inside.
Once you have the programs installed, cd into the directory you
installed to and issue the command
lmutil lmhostid
Write down the Host ID that it gives you, as you'll need it later. Note,
this is only for Unix installations. The lmutil program exists for
Windows too, but will not append a checksum to the machine ID which
will cause the order form to reject it as invalid. For a Windows
installation, see the instructions above.
Click here and fill out the form. For a
floating license, you must specify the Host ID of the machine which will be
running the license server. Be very careful when you enter your Host ID and
your email address. There is a checksum built into the Host ID of a Windows
machine to help ensure that you don't mistype it, but the Unix Host IDs don't
have this check (sorry, we just use them, we don't generate them).
When the order is complete, you will be sent a license.dat file by email,
which is why it's so important to give a valid email address.
When you receive the license.dat, save it into the directory that the
license manager is installed into. For Windows, this is the same as the
directory that MI/X is installed into. For Unix, it's wherever you installed
it to above.
Next edit the license.dat with a text editor. You may need to change the
VENDOR line to point to the location of the license manager program.
If you installed the license manager to the default location, you shouldn't
have to change anything.
To start the license manager on Windows, open the Windows Control Panel and
open the Services applet. Highlight the "MIX License Server" entry and press
start. If it's already running, stop it and restart it.
To start the license manager on Unix, run the command
/usr/local/flexlm/lmgrd -c /usr/local/flexlm/license.dat

Telling MI/X to use the floating license |
Run MI/X. When the authorization dialog comes up, select the machine type
that the license server is on. Enter the name of the license server.
